Lions to induct Paulsen
By Deb Holland, Journal Staff WriterRAPID CITY Former Pennington County commissioner and Rapid City CPA Orland Paulsen will be inducted into the South Dakota Lions Hall of Fame.
The induction ceremony will be Saturday, Jan. 25, during the South Dakota Lions State Convention at Rapid City's Best Western Ramkota Hotel. Paulsen, along with Redfield's Joan Marlette, are this year's only inductees.
Fellow members of the Rapid City Downtown Lions Club nominated Paulsen. He joined the Rapid City Lions Club in 1957. He was elected club president in 1969, district governor in 1982, and MD-5 Council chairman in 1983. He received an International President's Award for his work in Lions Youth Exchange in 1986.
Also, the Rapid City club honored Paulsen with a Melvin Jones Fellowship in 1982 and a life membership in Lions Club International Foundation in 1997. Paulsen has served in numerous positions at the club, district and multiple- district levels.
And Paulsen is in his 40th year of perfect attendance at Lions Club meetings.
"Being in the Lions Club has been a way for me to give back to the community," Paulsen said. "It's also allowed me to travel. I've met a lot of great people along the way."
A native of Irene, Paulsen served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and graduated with a degree in accounting from then- National College of Business. Paulsen, who earned his certified public accountant's certificate in 1961, worked for Rapid City's McGladrey & Pullen for many years before retiring. Paulsen was a Pennington County commissioner from 1994 to 1998.
The South Dakota Lions convention begins this afternoon with registration, followed by an evening mixer.
