Notes From the PRESIDENT

We’ve reached the end of another dance season, so I would like to thank those who contributed their time, effort and talent into the club activities this past year. I would also like to extend a welcome to the new officers for the     the coming year:

Henry Olivier and Jerry McMartin  - Vice Presidents

Dennis Wilkerson – Treasurer

Paul Arthur – Secretary

The primary function of our organization has been the sponsoring of club dances and providing dance lessons and practice sessions. We will continue to focus our efforts on these two areas. The Tuesday night dance lessons continue to be very successful, thanks to the efforts of Linda and Henry. Financially, the club-sponsored dances need to be evaluated.

Our last dance of the year, held at the Civic Center was well attended by our club members, as well as numerous non-club dancers. We appreciate all the non-member support and hope to recruit many into our club. I had many positive comments on the dance and wish to thank Wanda and Dave for their organization of the dance and their great DJ service.

As this is our final Newsletter for the ‘2002-‘2003 dance season; I hope you will all have an enjoyable summer and that we’ll continue to see you on the dance floor!  Our next event will be the pre-season potluck dinner and dance next September.

                                          Gary Willmes

The May meeting was called to order by president Gary Willmes at 7:15 PM.  The minutes were approved as presented in the last newsletter.

Gary submitted the finical report, which included the dance report for the year to date and the yearend income/expense statement.  The only dance showing a profit for the year was the graduation dance at the Civic Center.  Yearend balance is $1877.02. Jerry   Mc Martin made a motion to approve the report, seconded by Arlene Wilkerson.

Old Business:

   There was no old business.

New Business:

It was decided that the club would sponsor four dances next year, the fall dance in October, the Christmas Party dance on Dec. 6th, the winter dance, for Valentines Day in Feb. and the final dance in April.  Linda Splittstoesser will head up the committee in October, Elaine Reed February and Dave and Wanda Pakalski April.  There will be a Pot Luck dinner in September.  Jerry McMartin will check on a date, which will coincide with one of the Canyon Lake Senior’s dances.

Linda Splittstoesser has arranged to rent the main hall at Canyon Lake Senior Center for dance lessons starting the first Tuesday in October.  Lessons will be offered each month through April except for December.  Two-step will be offered in October.  It was noted that there are generally more women taking lessons than men and that it would be helpful if some of the men in the club would volunteer to be available as partners for the beginning session each practice night.

There will be two opportunities for club members to get together this summer.  Jerry McMartin’s family is planning a birthday party for him in Canyon Lake Park on June 14th.  He invites all club members to attend and Gary and Kathy Willmes will look into a reserved space for the Club to meet in the German Tent at the Fair.  Check your E-mail for final details.  Those without E-mail will receive a phone message.

The certificate of authority for the bank account at Black Hills Federal Credit Union needs to be updated.  Paul Arthur will sign off on the account and Dennis Wilkerson and Gary Willmes, will be the current officials.

Linda Splittstoesser made the motion to adjoin.

Paul Arthur,  Secretary

PRACTICE

THE DANCE CLUB NEEDS YOU & YOU & YOU!            We can’t have too many people!

Henry and I would like to thank everyone for the support of the dance lessons over the past year. It’s

always nice to see new faces at the basic lessons where response was very good; we also had a few attending the intermediate lessons; now if we can just keep them interested! It’s always great to see the regulars making the newer dancers welcome. Henry and I had an awesome time teaching.

Our lessons are held at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Center, Tuesday’s, October though May and are usually located in the Main Hall.  Beginner level lessons, emphasizing basic footwork, are at 7:00 p.m.  Intermediate level lessons, emphasizing patterns and moves, begin at 8:00 p.m.  The charge is $2 per person.

[We need men, men, men!]

Instructors; if there is something you would like to

teach, give me a call.

Again, all of you dancers remember these

 instructors volunteer their time for the lessons;

that’s one reason the price stays so reasonable.

Please, thank them for their efforts and patience.

In the mean time have a great summer and keep on

dancing.

See You on the Dance Floor!!

Linda Splittstoesser,

Practice Chairman

 Card Corner

Another dance season has come to an end for us. Things seem to be looking better for the club, as we had a very successful last dance at the Civic Center and even made a little profit this time.

No cards were sent this month. Last month a card was sent to Dennis Wilkerson, wishing him a speedy recovery from his misfortune. Hope things continue to go well for him and also for the Wilkerson family.

Also last month, Darwin Knudtson had surgery; but before I could get a card into the mail, he made a speedy recovery. Now it’s too late to send a card, so please let him know how good and healthy he looks.

Cards Chairman, 343-3309

Member Profile

Ron & Ellen Haffner, have lived in the area for 29 & 22 years respectively; Ron is an accountant and Ellen a secretary.  We’ve just gotten started dancing at this level, with some social dancing after we met two years ago.

We joined DTDC in April, 2003.

The types of dance/music we enjoy/prefer, are the Oldies & Country Music (new & old).    We’ve just learned the 2 step and jitterbug and enjoy both of them

Our enjoyment with dance is it’s something we’re learning together.  It’s fun to meet new people.

Our favorite dance event(s):  So far, the lessons are all we’ve been to; but the most memorable dance moment was the first night we danced together 2 years ago.

Membership News

Many of our members participated in the annual Black Hills Dance Festival held during the last weekend of April.  As always, it was a great event, with top-notch instructors and wonderful entertainment.  If you were unable to attend this year, be sure to put it on your calendar for next year!

DANCE BASICS

When Good Dancers Go Bad!

Do you consider yourself a fairly good dancer yet find yourself feeling inadequate when you dance with someone for the first time?

How is it that we can be admired for our skills when dancing with someone familiar yet look far less than adequate with someone new?

Have we gone bad suddenly? Why does it seem like others can change partners with ease?

Well, the truth is that those who change partners with ease have probably danced with each other several times before. Dancers tend to travel in the same circles so chances are they

will dance with several of the same people many times.  The first time you dance with someone is always more difficult.

This is illustrated by the following true story. A group of dancers were getting ready to perform at a local dance studio. The couples positioned themselves on the dance floor when suddenly all the women moved down one thus changing all the partners. Judging by the look of surprise (or perhaps panic?), I would say that many anticipated a much more difficult performance.

Don't worry if you can't seem to lead or follow effectively the first time around. As with anything "new" in life, there is a required adjustment period. You need some time to learn each other's body language. Relax and have fun even with the mistakes that happen. Eventually you will learn how to dance well with this person.

By not shutting out a person who doesn't dance well with you the first time, you will end up having many more partners that you can dance well with in the long run. Be patient and please be kind.
