Notes From the PRESIDENT
The
purpose of our club is to promote dance and provide a friendly dance
environment.
Our
major promotion is the Tuesday evening dance lessons that we provide to both
the beginning and intermediate level dancers, as well as, club members.
By
now the lessons have started and hopefully we are seeing many new and familiar
faces. Please make an effort to promote
our lessons to your friends and also feel welcome to come out and enjoy the
social atmosphere we have on Tuesday evenings.
We
had a good turn out for our potluck on Saturday, September 27th, at
the Senior Center. There was a variety
of very good food. Most of us stayed
for the Senior Center dance in the Viking Hall and burned off some of the
calories dancing to the Wilt Brothers.

PRACTICE
THE DANCE CLUB NEEDS YOU & YOU & YOU! We can’t have too many people!
Another dance season is upon us, with lessons beginning on October
07, 2003 (Two-Step and Waltz). An ad will be placed in the RC Journal; but make
sure and mention our lessons to anyone you know.
Also it would be helpful if we can get some extra men, especially
on our startup date. If you can help out please call 399-9813.
Things will pretty much stay as they’ve been in the past; except
we’re scheduled more in the Viking Hall this year; which will be an added plus.
Our lessons are held at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Center,
Tuesday’s; October though May. Beginner
level lessons, emphasizing basic footwork, are at 7:00 p.m. Intermediate level lessons, emphasizing
patterns and moves, begin at 8:00 p.m.
The charge is $2 per person.
[We need men, men, men!]
Instructors; if there’s something you’d
like to teach, give me a call.
Again, all of you dancers remember all
instructors volunteer their time for the
lessons; that’s one reason the price stays
so
reasonable. Please, thank them for their
efforts and patience.
Thanks to all for your support and help
during this dance season!
See You on the Dance Floor!!

It
is that time of year when the gardens are getting covered at night, the
sweaters are coming out of storage, kids are back in school, and DANCE LESSONS
have started.
Some
of you might have known Ron Trautman,
he passed away this summer. Even
though he and his wife Nancy were not members of our club they did come to some
dances and had taken some lessons. The
club sent Nancy a card expressing our sympathies.
A
card was sent to Paul Arthur, wishing him a speedy recovery from surgery.
Henry
Olivier had a bad accident involving a roof, a ladder, and the ground. I won’t go into details but he’s a lucky
man, in that he didn’t get hurt worse and can still walk. We sent a card wishing him a recovery from
that accident.
See everyone soon

DANCE BASICS
Dancing
Outside of the box.
Each one of us has probably had a slightly different introduction
to dancing. We didn't all start with the same dance and have identical teachers
in identical schools.
Instead, we received very specific instructions for our beginning
dance steps from our individual teachers who taught either in accordance with
their personal experience or the syllabus of the dance studio that employed
them.
When you are new to a dance you spend a lot of time focused upon
timing,
footwork and other specific rules for that dance. This structure is very necessary at
first because it provides a starting point and lays your foundation in the
dance.
I believe the majority of dancers will continue this pattern even
after they have mastered the basics. Many won't even do a dance step that is
not specifically directed by their teacher. They will reject any dance form or
teaching method that does not conform to their experience.
I call this "dancing inside the box". It is the method
of choice for many solid dancers although I find it rather limiting.
My preference has always been "dancing outside the box"
because I
believe
that dancing is primarily an art form rather than a science.
We would not have some of the dances that we do today if someone
didn't
jump out of the box to create them.
Hustle and Cha Cha are two very good examples that come to mind.
And what made truly great dancers like Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly so famous?
Wasn't it that they did things differently? Didn't they put a new spin on some
traditional dance forms?
The key to dancing outside the box is to be open to different schools of thought. Allow
yourself and others the possibility of doing things differently when the occasion arises.
Realize that
something
is not "wrong" just because it is different from your
experience.
Rather than limit yourself, why not enrich your dancing with the many
possibilities that this art form allows?
We are all different. Some may prefer to stay inside the box and
that is
fine too. It is my hope that a mutual love for dancing is
what
will keep us all in harmony regardless of the method we choose
to
follow.
