Just a reminder, that we have our annual

PRACTICE
THE DANCE CLUB NEEDS YOU & YOU & YOU! We can’t have too many people!
Spring is
here and another season of dance lessons are almost over. I would like to take
a minute to thank Dave and Wanda for the nice job they did on jitterbug and
2-step during March. It was kind of nice to be the student instead of the
instructor for a session. We had a nice turn out and everyone had a lot of fun.
Thanks again Dave and Wanda. In April Henry and I will teach beginning east
coast swing and maybe a little review of jitterbug if we have requests for it.
The second class I think we will start with east coast and end up with whatever
the majority wants to do!!!! How is that for not having to make a decision?
All members
should plan on attending the meeting April 13th as there will be some decisions
made on the direction the club takes next fall.
We need
volunteers for everything!!! Speaking of volunteers if any would like to volunteer
to teach a move at the second class please get a hold of me. If you have never
done this kind of thing before and would like to try it now is the time. Again
just call me. That's all from my corner. Remember we have some exciting things
coming up in April. Our east coast swing lesson of course, and the Black Hills
Dance Festival is at the end of the month. Put them both on your calendar!!!
Our lessons
are held at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Center, Tuesday’s October though
May. Beginner level lessons,
emphasizing basic footwork, are at 7:00 PM..
Intermediate level lessons, emphasizing patterns and moves, begin at
8:00 PM. The charge is $2 per person.
[We need single men and women!]

Profile
Patricia & Jerry Wright
Remember these folks? Their profile appeared in our Newsletter so
long ago I can’t find it for reference; but we never got a photograph to
accompany the article. So we’ll run the “Not so brief” profile once again.
My name is Jerome Thomas Wright; I operate under the alias of
Jerry or Captain Trash. I am presently
a very happy garbage man. I have lived
in Rapid City all of my life except when Uncle Army took me away for a while
and while I toured the great state of Montana as a railroad guy. There was also a year and a half I lived in
Indiana attending grad school. I have actually been dancing since about my 4th
or 5th grade when I used to dance with my little sister Colleen (alias “Killer”
or also know as Colleen Marvin) at the Interior, SD and Elm Springs, SD
dances. The rest of my earlier dancing
career was for the sole purpose of getting close to girls. I have gotten more
serious in my dancing career lately because my wife (Formerly Patricia
Lang) loves to dance and I want to stay on her good side. Kind of important in my life, you might say;
I joined DTDC through a marital merger in July of 2002. The types of dancing I enjoy the best are
the waltz and the ones where I do not have to count a lot. My dear wife has refreshed my basic math
each time we take a dance lesson or go out for a dance. So you see, I am getting additional
educational benefits along with the aerobic and romantic exercise in dancing. What I enjoy most about dancing is being
with Patricia and the chance to visit with our dancing colleagues. My favorite
dance event and my most memorable dance event was dancing with Patricia three
years ago to Anne Murry “Can I Have
This Dance’. As a matter of fact,
Patricia and I danced into our new lives as husband and wife to that tune on
our way out of the church last summer.
Patricia Wright, Software Development Specialist, Respec
Engineering and Consultants. 40+ years
as a native of South Dakota; other than a seven year stint in Wyoming during my
previous married life and in Spearfish during college, I’ve lived in Rapid City
all my life. My dance interest was
renewed in 1995 when I became newly single. I began with the Leroy Oleson dance
classes and was introduced a few years later to the DTDC lessons on Tuesday
nights at the Senior Center. I love
Latin dance steps as well as the waltz.
Being a romantic at heart I consider these “dances of romance”. The slower dances with elegant, “big
ballroom” styling, are a thrill for me. I enjoy the socializing, dressing up
for special occasions, and aerobic affect that dance offers. My favorite dance event is definitely the
Christmas ball that combines the essence of glitz, wonderful food, and a
festive spirit. My most memorable dance
moment was attending the Colorado Classic in Denver and watching an
inspirational level of dance I had never dreamed possible.

DANCE BASICS
Traveling Turns Part I:
All dancers
reach that point where they must learn how to do a rapid succession of turns
while traveling. This is the mark of an
exceptional
dancer. How do you travel in a specified direction while spinning WITHOUT falling
on your face? You use a technique called "spotting".
First KNOW
what your end destination will be. If you are going in a straight line as you
would in a slot dance, look in the direction
that you
want to travel in as you start your turn and try to focus on a specific
stationary object that is just beyond your end point.
As you
complete each full turn keep focusing on the SAME object or "spot"
every time. You will travel in the direction that you focus on. The line that
you travel in will be as straight as the accuracy of your focus.
Traveling Turns Part II:
In last Part
I, I discussed how to do a rapid succession of turns while traveling in a
straight line by using a technique called "spotting". I said that
focusing on a specific object or "spot" that is just beyond the end
point of your destination would keep you from getting dizzy and disoriented. It
would also keep you moving in the right direction.
Well that's
great for straight lines but what do you do when you need to spin in a circle?
It is not
possible to focus on the same spot because you are ending up in a different
direction each time you complete a full turn. Your original "spot"
will only be visible AFTER you have completed the full circle and you will
probably fall on your face before that happens.
The solution
here is to focus on a specific area of your partner. As a follower, I usually
focus on my partner's left forearm for double-handed turns as it is easily in
view each time I complete a turn. For single-handed spins I focus on his tie or
shirt color. A leader who is spinning in a circle can focus on his partner's
necklace simply the color of her blouse or dress.
When
spinning in a circle your partner acts as the center of that circle. Focusing
on your partner will keep you spinning along the
circumference
of that circle without getting dizzy and disoriented.
