Notes From the PRESIDENT
It pays to go dancing!!!! One of our members, my wife Kathy, was the
lucky winner of the $475.00 BINGO jackpot, in addition to a $70.00 Speedo game,
at the Moose Club on January 9th.
The club participated in two dances at the Moose Club during January and
both were well attended.
February, March, and April will be significant
months for our club. We have two dances
scheduled at the Civic Center during this time. The Civic Center dances provide a smoke free environment that
many people request.
The significance of the Civic Center dances is
that we need enough participation to cover at least the cost of the rent. Planning next year’s events is based on the
success of past activities.
The other significant event is that we will have
the election of club officers in April.
Our officer positions, as well as, those that do a lot of work on
various committees and projects are getting thin. Many of the same people have served the club for the last several
years. We are seriously in need
of involvement by some other members.
If you are willing to serve please let us know.
I look forward to seeing many of you at our
February and March dances. Remember to
come early for the Moose Club dances and enjoy a very reasonably priced meal
and play some BINGO. You also might be
a winner.

Beverly (BJ) Cole
BJ, owner of
E-mmaculate Cleaning Service, moved from East River (Dakota Country Dance Club
land) to Rapid City in January of 1989; a blissful 15 years ago.
I first
began dancing with instruction in formal waltz, when I was 4 years old. Mom
really “forced” Dad into the effort, since she was of the opinion that no women
could call herself a lady, unless she could dance a passable waltz. She never
did ask ME if I had any interest in becoming a “lady”, however!
I joined the
DTDC after the Halloween party of ‘2000.
I love a
good waltz, upbeat East Coast Swing or Texas 2-step. And still love a formal
ballroom after all these years. But some good old, rockin’ –stomping honky tonk
is what charges me up; preferably with the strong lead of a real rancher or
Texas import cowboy. I love the great variety of dance that remains to be
learned. The field is always changing and modifying existing styles. I love
creating new approaches and choreography.
My favorite
dance events are our holiday dinner dances and events when we are blessed with
visiting instructors. Also great fun and thrilling are the unorganized dance
occasions, when I can hunt down and bag unsuspecting, stag partners in the
wild.
I have fond memories of the year I spent
working closely with Jim & Marty Ferrazanno and Les Harrington, to
choreograph and train for the anticipated spot light dance with Jerry Naasz in
Sioux Falls. Since that was not realized, I recall, with a lot of satisfaction,
the evening that my former dance partner, Andy Petrichko, and I cleared the
floor during a DJ dance at the Mother Butler Center and received a standing
ovation from the crowd after dancing the first Triple 2-step Andy had ever
danced. I got a great big hug from Andy for coaching him through it, by
whispering in his ear as we proceeded through the sequence.

DANCE BASICS
Develop a
Smart Lead
Excerpt
from the June, 2000 Newsletter.
A
"smart" lead is far superior to a "strong" lead. Strength
is not a
requirement
for good leading techniques. Leaders who grip their
partners
too tightly and push them around the dance floor make dancing quite
uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous for the follower.
Two
qualities of a smart lead are:
a. The
leader should move his ENTIRE body as a unit and not just his
feet.
The upper body movement is the primary communicator of direction for the
follower. If a leader moves only his feet and leaves his body behind, all he
will accomplish is stepping on his partner.
b. Only
2-3 fingers are required to indicate the direction and tempo of the followers
turn(s). The follower turns herself. She just needs to know where to turn and
how many times to turn. Trying to "crank" a follower through turns
with exaggerated arm movements will only
throw
her off balance and possibly lead to a fall.
Customize
Your Lead
Excerpt
from the July, 2000 Newsletter.
Good
dancing requires good communication between partners. All
dancers
need to be aware that each partner they dance with is unique. Therefore, each
will require a slightly different method of
communication
for lead and follow techniques to be effective. Some
things
to take into consideration when you dance with a new partner
are:
HEIGHT
Leaders
should remember to adjust their hand and arm positions
according
to their partner's height. This sounds obvious but I can
speak
from experience as I am short. You would be surprised how many
leaders
who are used to dancing with tall women will stretch my arms way up as though I
were 6 feet tall!
DRAG
VS. SENSITIVITY
Leaders
must also pay attention to the way each new partner follows.
I compare
this to the steering feature on an automobile. Some
followers
are like driving a car with power steering...It requires
very
little effort to direct them. Others are like the manual steering on an old
tractor...You practically have to pick them up to move them. You must assess
each follower and apply the proper amount of guidance in your lead.
SKILL
LEVEL
Assess
what dancing level your partner is on by starting out with simple dance
patterns and then advancing. If you determine that your partner is a beginner
then I would advise you to keep your
dancing
simple enough for both of you to enjoy the experience. You
can
advance very gradually the more you dance with each other.
