Notes From the PRESIDENT
The holidays are over and hopefully they were
enjoyable for all of our members. It is
now back to our routine life style.
Dance classes start again this month.
Remember our January Club meeting which will be held Tuesday, January
13, 2004 at 6:30 PM prior to our class.
I want to thank those who organized and worked
for our Christmas dance. Thank you!
Paul & Mary Arthur, for arranging the chicken and ham. Don & Elaine Reed, for getting all the
utensils and beverages. Also, Henry
& Linda for getting the Hall ready and obtaining a band. Lastly, thank you to all the people who
brought food and came out to enjoy an evening of eating and dance. I heard some favorable comments on both the
food and the band. The only downside
was that our attendance was smaller than previous years.
We have some club sponsored dances scheduled in January and February. Be sure to look for that information in this newsletter. The success of our club and future dances really depends on the participation we get at these events.

DANCE BASICS
How to Avoid
Wobbly
Excerpt
from the December, 2001 Newsletter.
Chances are
that we have all experienced turning off balance and feeling a bit awkward.
This is bound to happen from time to time because NOBODY is perfect.
Here is a
list of some possible causes and remedies.
1. Improper
posture - A top does not spin well once it begins to lean over and neither will
you. Make sure that your body is aligned correctly. Keep yourself centered.
2. Improper
timing - Leaders must be sure to start the setup and execution of the turn(s)
at the proper moment in the music count.
Starting too
early or too late will cause you to throw the turn off when you try to
compensate for the error.
3. Improper
positioning - This responsibility also falls upon the leader. If the hand that
guides the follower's turn is too high or
low, it will
throw off the follower's balance. The best hand position that I have found is
for the leader's hand to be slightly above the follower's head.
4. Improper
use of force - There is a tendency for the leader to believe that he has to
physically "TURN" the follower. This causes the use of excessive
force as the leader tries to "crank" the follower through the series
of turns that he has in mind.
Leaders,
please keep in mind that you are not the power supply for the turn(s), you are
only the guide. Indicate the direction and
tempo of the
turn and let the follower power her own turn. This will help to keep both of
you balanced.
The #1
Question From Followers
Excerpt
from the April, 2000 Newsletter.
I have
two tips that will help.
-
First: It is a common mistake to rush into the turn too soon. Trying
to get
a head start on the turn to be sure you will finish on time
will
only throw you off timing and annoy the leader. Wait for the
actual
lead to turn before starting the turn. Use the time that
comes
before the turn to be sure that you are properly set up to
begin
your turn.
-
Second: Keep your hands and arms loose and very fluid during the
actual
turns. Stiffening up will cause you to lose your balance and
to spin
off in a wrong direction.
A Good
Follower's Trademark.
Excerpt
from the May, 2000 Newsletter.
Adaptability
is a trademark of any good follower. You must be willing and able to change
your way of dancing so that it blends with what the leader is doing. Leaders
are unique and many are far from perfect! Some may use a different timing for a
dance and some may just have bad timing and an ineffective lead.
Be
sensitive to the way your leader moves so that you can pick up his timing. If
the timing is off, do your best to keep him on time without forcing the issue.
You will look better if you are dancing off time together as a unit than if you
are on time and the leader is off. Your leader will think that you are a
wonderful dancer because you are able to follow him and you make him feel good
about his dancing ability.
