Notes From the PRESIDENT

Thank you to our members that supported our Valentines dance at the Civic Center.  About 20 couples attended an enjoyable evening of dance.  I received some very positive comments from our dancers but our goal of meeting the necessary revenue to continue these types of dances fell about 15 couples short.  Like so many things, it is a good news-bad news report.

We had a few members show up for our left over ham and potluck lunch at the Moose Club on Sunday, February 22nd.  As always, we had plenty of good food and Linda provided some music for a Sunday afternoon dance.

The election committee (Henry) reported at our February club meeting that filling the slate of officers for the coming year would be difficult.  The lack of attendance at monthly meetings the last couple of years, has made it very challenging to operate or function under our by-laws.  We will discuss this at our annual election meeting on April 13th.  Some changes to our club organization might have to be made.

The coldest part of winter should be behind us now and we can start looking forward to spring.  Hope to see many of you out and about.

PRACTICE

THE DANCE CLUB NEEDS YOU & YOU & YOU!            We can’t have too many people!

Our lessons in March will be 2-step and jitterbug in the basic class

(7:00 to 8:00) and 2-step for the first class of intermediate;(8:00 to 9:00). There are 5 Tuesdays in March so the second class will be various dances. Dave and Wanda are going to be guest instructors for March. So if you should see them out and about put in a request for something you would like to learn! Its nice to have different instructors because we all have different moves to teach!!! Again we do need extras to dance with people who need partners. It’s especially important at the first class to keep people coming back. So help if you can.

Henry & I (mostly me) will be doing another DJ thing at the Moose on

Friday March 12th from 8:45 to 11:00 or so. This is done on a donation

basis, so we will have a bucket out.

It’s nice to have a place to go on

Friday nights. I'm scheduled to do this through April; but if we get a lot of requests it could continue through the summer. So let me know

if you like it!!!!!!!!

Well enough of this. Thanks to everyone who attended Cha-Cha lessons in Feb. Remember keep practicing. See you at lessons next Tuesday if not before.

If anyone has something they would like to review or teach at the intermediate classes, be sure and give me a call. I’d sure appreciate it.

Our lessons are held at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Center, Tuesday’s October though May.  Beginner level lessons, emphasizing basic footwork, are at 7:00 PM..  Intermediate level lessons, emphasizing patterns and moves, begin at 8:00 PM.  The charge is $2 per person.

[We need single men and women!]

The wind is howling today and the snow is coming down as I write this.  Spring in South Dakota must be here!

Elaine Reed had an accident on the ski slopes.  It could easily have been more serious, and we all wish her a speedy recovery.  The members that attended our potluck lunch at the Moose Club all signed a

get well card which was sent to her.

See you all on the dance floor!

DANCE BASICS

Resist Part I

The art of resistance while dancing is very difficult to explain and even more difficult to execute well. A very basic explanation would be: The leader exerts a force either pushing or pulling you in a specified direction. You exert an ALMOST equal force in the opposite direction. For example, while holding both hands the leader wants to push you back. If you exert NO force pushing back towards him, you will not move at all. Exert too much force and you will push him back instead. Exert just the right amount of force pushing back towards him and you will end up in the exact position that he would like you to be in. This holds true for pulling motions as well.

There are many variables that affect the amount of resistance that you will exert. Some are: your partner's dance style. the way you are feeling at the moment. the way your partner is feeling at the moment; the

character of the dance; the dance tempo and much more.

Developing a good resistance is an intuitive process that requires time. Awareness is the first step. Now that you have a basic under-standing of it, you are on your way to mastering this art and becoming a better follower.

Traveling Turns Part I

All dancers reach that point where they must learn how to do a rapid succession of turns while traveling. This is the mark of an exceptional dancer. How do you travel in a specified direction while spinning WITHOUT falling on your face? You use a technique called "spotting".

First KNOW what your end destination will be. If you are going in a straight line as you would in a slot dance, look in the direction that you want to travel in as you start your turn and try to focus on a specific stationary object that is just beyond your end point.

As you complete each full turn keep focusing on the SAME object or

"spot" every time. You will travel in the direction that you focus on. The line that you travel in will be as straight as the accuracy of your focus.
