PRACTICE
THE DANCE CLUB NEEDS YOU & YOU & YOU! We can’t have too many people!
Thank you
Bill Gabbert and Zee Caldwell; for the Waltz lesson they gave us on April 27th. They were visiting Bills’ relatives in Rapid
City and were spending a couple of weeks in our area; they drove from
Albuquerque, NM where they live.
The 2003 –
2004 dance lessons were a big success with lots of new beginner faces, to go
along with some of the older ones. We enjoyed the camaraderie, had lots of fun
and laughs and learned a few new moves.
We need
volunteers for everything!!! Speaking of volunteers if any would like to
volunteer to teach a move at the second class please get a hold of me. If you
have never done this kind of thing before and would like to try it now is the
time. Again just call me. That's all from my corner.
Our lessons
are held at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Center, Tuesday’s October though
April. Beginner level lessons,
emphasizing basic footwork, are at 7:00 PM..
Intermediate level lessons, emphasizing patterns and moves, begin at
8:00 PM. The charge is $2 per person.
[We need single men and women!]

Editor’s Note:
Please let Henry and
Linda, know how much we appreciate and enjoy their hosting the DTDC Tuesday
dance lessons. They’ve done a wonderful job of instruction and have brought a
lot of attention to our club; not to mention the monies received that have
helped keep our club afloat!
Thank you, Henry and
Linda!

DANCE BASICS
A Common Error:
Whenever
I'm scanning the dance floor at a social dance event, I can
usually
spot several couples who are making one very common error. It's something that
I see even among the intermediate level dancers and it's a dead give away that
more work is needed before the advanced level can be reached. I call it the
error of exaggerated movement.
Somehow
people get the idea that if they make larger movements and move more body parts
during each dance measure, they are better dancers. I see this especially in
the Latin dances among the women. Their hips, shoulders and everything in
between get thrown in every direction. They think this is impressive but it
really just looks out of control and unpolished.
With
men the error usually takes a slightly different form especially among the
beginners. They tend to take super large steps and accent their dancing with
even larger steps in various directions. This can make dancing to fast music
especially difficult.
An
important point to remember is that the further your foot extends
Out,
past your hip line, the more time and energy you waste. If you do this in every
measure of your dance, it will make your movements choppy. It may even throw
off your timing.
Now I'm
not saying that you should never use your hips and shoulders
or take
large steps. These things are all very acceptable as accents during a dance.
Just be aware that for something to qualify as an accent it should occur at
well spaced intervals during your dance.
An
accent will lose its impact if you do it too often. The best dancers are always
in control over ALL of their movements. Even their accents are well thought out
although they may appear to be spontaneous and free.
Control
is at the center of even the wildest performance that you can remember seeing
professionals dance. Seek to maintain control of your movements first. Start
with the smaller movements and then you can gradually expand on their size.
Dancing With Cabin Fever
I had
absolutely no idea what to write about when I sat down at my
computer
to produce this newsletter. I felt totally out of touch
with
dancing for two reasons:
Recovering
from surgery does not include anything dance related.
The
Winter has really hit the East Coast hard AGAIN this year
making
it difficult even for healthy people to leave their homes
and
travel to dance events, etc.
Endless
days of cold, ice, snow and gray skies have taken their toll
on me.
My mind was a complete blank.
Then I
looked up to see Michael working through some new dance moves
and
using his dance notation to record them. When I told him my
problem
he said, " Why not write about your problem?"
Great
Advice! Everyone experiences a time of Winter in their life
literally
or figuratively. We all have those times when dancing gets
pushed
out of the picture for one reason or another.
What
can you do to keep your love of dancing alive and your skills
sharp
when your Winter arrives?
First,
give yourself permission to leave dancing when necessary and
attend
to more important matters. Adding guilt for dropping your
dance
agenda will only make matters worse.
The
dance studio, club, or whatever will still be there (or an
equivalent)
when you're ready to get back into the dance scene. Your
skills
can lie dormant for a time without any permanent damage being
done.
You may
need to return to dancing slowly and gradually build up to
full
power again. Use the same process that you would use if you had left a gym or
any other sport for some time because dancing does
require
similar physical activity.
A large
part of dancing lies in the mind. Use your imagination to
create
new dance patterns, stylings and so on. See and feel yourself
dancing
to your favorite (Hustle, Mambo, etc) song with your favorite partner. Make it
as real as you can in your mind and you'll end up feeling as refreshed as if
you've just left a great dance session.
You'll
be surprised by the effect this can have on your dancing. You
may
come back from your Winter with a fresh style, stronger and better than ever.
I've had this experience many times during my dancing years. It's more common
than you think.
Enjoy!
Social
dancing, is meant to be enjoyed! Sometimes we can get so caught up in the
learning process that we forget to have a good time. Let's start this ”new
year” by not taking ourselves so seriously that we forget to enjoy our dancing.
