The annual DTDC “Christmas potluck dinner/dance” will start at Noon, December 05, 2004; at the Rapid City Moose Lodge, with dancing from 1:00 – 5:00 PM to a live band: “Midnight Sun”.  This event is free of charge and you are encouraged to bring guests.  Be sure to put it on your calendar.  The club will furnish ham and baked potatoes, as well as plates and all utensils. You’re asked to bring a side dish, dessert or munchies.

There will be Spotlight dances featured, including a performance by the Hot Shots.

The holiday season gets very hectic, and we are hoping for a better turnout by scheduling the dance in the afternoon.  Donations to the club are always appreciated.

On Saturday, April 9, 2005, we will have our annual DTDC “Spring Graduation Dance” at 7:30 p.m. in the Rapid City Civic Center (Room H) with “Wandave” DJ music.  Dance instructors in the area will assist us by encouraging their students to attend.  All DTDC members, line dance and couples dance students and the public is invited to attend.  Admission to this dance will be $5 per person.

Remember to attend the monthly DJ dances on the second Friday of each month.  These dances are held at the Moose Lodge with Linda and Henry furnishing DJ music from 8:45 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Free-will donations are welcome.  There is plenty of floor space and great music for dancing!  We’ve had a nice turnout this fall and hope to get even more of you interested in coming each month.

Also, we want to encourage and support your attendance at the monthly dances held upstairs at the new Roosevelt Swim Center.  These dances are scheduled from 7:30 – 11:00 p.m. on the last Friday of each month.  Dances are hosted by, Debbie Ellerton.  Wandave DJ’s furnish the music.  The wood floor is wonderful for dancing and the room is smoke-free.  Plan to check out this new facility and attend the next dance on Friday, November 26th. Admission is $5 per person.  Attendance at the dances has been great!  And includes line and couples dancers of all ages having a great time dancing to great music!

DTDC will also continue offering weekly dance lessons with Linda and Henry each Tuesday night at the Viking Hall in the CLSCC. Beginners: 7:00 p.m., Intermediates at 8:00 p.m.  During the past year we had several members request that more singles attend so please come, even if you don’t have a partner!

next dtdc board meeting: 11/09/04 6:30 p.m. clscc viking hall

We will continue to hold monthly DTDC board meetings at 6:30 p.m., on the second Tuesday of the month in the Viking Hall at CLSCC.  All DTDC members are invited to attend.  Please give your input and ideas to the board members.  The meetings are brief and completed at 7:00 p.m. before the dance lessons begin.

Member Profile

Sandra Limerick

I’m a nurse practitioner in the Rapid City area, where I’ve lived for the past five years.

I’ve only been dancing for the past year and joined the DTDC this past October. So far I’ve enjoyed dancing in the Ballroom, Country-Western and Folk venues. I’m looking forward to the experience of learning additional dance movements; which will enhance my love of music and the social interactions that accompany it.

I’ve been attending the Tuesday night dance lessons taught by Linda & Henry and have enjoyed them very much, as well as the making of new friendships. I hope to meet all of you over time and look forward to talking and dancing with you.

Dance Basics

 Routines Gone Wild

"One problem is ballroom dancers who insist on executing a step pattern- routine unconcerned with other couples on the floor. Once started, they do not discontinue a

pattern and may collide with others and some get hurt.

These dancers are often very good technicians, with an actor's skill in looking good while dancing, but dance their sequence as a gymnastic routine. They need better dance etiquette."

If you go out dancing at all, you're bound to have seen at least one couple dancing in the way that Jerry has just described. What should you do when faced with a dangerous dancing couple like that?

Remember that this couple is totally unaware of their surroundings.

They are focused solely on themselves and their routine. You should make up for their lack of sensitivity by being SUPER AWARE yourself.

1. Start your dancing as far away

    from them as possible.

            2. As you dance, be sure to maintain

    a safe distance.

3. Should this couple come so close

to you that they pose a danger,

don't hesitate to put out your hand

to keep them from getting any

               closer.

Note that I'm not saying to smack the

person. Just keep your hand out so that if they move close enough to bump into your hand, they'll stop at that point before they do any more damage.

I realize that it's more difficult with the smooth dances because placing your hand out would break the dance position. In this case you'll have to wait until the actual moment that you need to block.

I know it sounds more like martial arts than dancing. However, there are some similarities at times between a very crowded dance floor and a combat situation. Over the years, I've developed my own "Defensive Dancing" style that includes some basic Karate blocking movements when I turn for just this type of event. The key is awareness.

Now in defense of these couples who mow the rest of us down, I competed many years ago and understand the desire to practice your routines 24/7. I also know that you want to look your best when dancing in public and a routine you're comfortable with is the easiest way to accomplish that.

You can still practice your routines if you scale it down to accommodate the people dancing near you. Also, be willing to break

the routine when it's necessary and pick it up again when the space becomes available. Again, the key is awareness.

This may actually help your performance. We all know that things can go wrong at a competition. You must literally be able to think on your feet. Dancing your routine while being aware of your surroundings and being considerate of the general public will

improve your ability to respond quickly and appropriately to anything that might happen on your competition day.
