Notes From the board
Dakota Territory Dance
Club extends a big Welcome! to the new dance season.
Our DTDC Board Members
met briefly on the evening of July 9th at the Moose Lodge to plan
dance events for the coming dance year.
We think you will find that we have more dancing opportunities than ever
for you to attend this dance season!
Our first
club-sponsored event will be the annual potluck supper to kick off the dance
season at the Canyon Lake Senior Citizen’s Center Library at 6:00 p.m. on
Saturday, September 25, 2004. At 7:30
p.m. we will walk across the hall for dancing to the Wilt Brothers band in the
Viking Hall.
Admission to the CLSCC Dance is $5 per person. (A big thank you to Gary Reynolds of the CLSCC for
scheduling this band to coincide with our annual potluck supper.)
Please bring a dish to
share. Our club will furnish plates,
cups, plastic utensils, napkins, and coffee.
Every year the food gets better!
Don’t miss this opportunity to bring new and old friends interested in
dancing and renew friendships with DTDC members.
Our DTDC Board also
planned two additional dance events. On
Sunday, December 5, 2004, we will hold the annual DTDC Christmas potluck
dinner/dance at 1:00 p.m. at the Moose Lodge with dancing from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
to a live band: Midnight Sun. This
event is free of charge for members. Be
sure to put it on your calendar. The
holiday season gets very hectic, and we are hoping for a better turnout by
scheduling the dance in the afternoon.
Guests are welcome with donations encouraged.
On Saturday, April 9,
2005, we will have our annual DTDC Spring Graduation Dance at 7:30 p.m. in the
Civic Center (Room H) with Wandave DJ music.
Dance instructors in the area will assist us by encouraging their
students to attend. All DTDC members,
line dance and couples dance students and the public is invited to attend. Admission to this dance will be $5 per
person.
Remember to attend the
monthly DJ dances on the second Friday of each month, beginning October 8,
2004. These dances are held at the
Moose Lodge with Linda and Henry furnishing DJ music from 8:45 p.m. to 11:00
p.m. Free-will donations are welcome.
There is plenty of floor space and great music for dancing! We’ve had a nice turnout during the past
year and hope to get even more of you interested in coming each month.
Also, we want to
encourage and support your attendance at the monthly dances held upstairs at
the new Roosevelt Swim Center. These
dances are scheduled from 7:30 – 11:00 p.m. on the last Friday of each
month. Dances are hosted by, Debbie
Ellerton. Wandave DJ’s furnish the
music. The wood floor is wonderful for
dancing and the room is smoke-free.
Plan to check out this new facility and attend the next dance on Friday,
September 24th. Admission is $5 per person. A great group of dancers attended the August
27th dance. There were line
and couples dancers of all ages having a great time dancing to great music!
DTDC will also
continue offering weekly dance lessons with Linda and Henry each Tuesday night
at the Viking Hall in the CLSCC beginning Tuesday, October 5th
(Beginners: 7:00 p.m., Intermediate: 8:00 p.m.) During the past year we had several members request that more
singles attend so please come, even if you don’t have a partner!
next
dtdc board meeting: 10/12/04 6:30 p.m. clscc viking hall
We will continue to hold monthly DTDC board
meetings at 6:30 p.m., on the second Tuesday of the month in the Viking Hall at
CLSCC. All DTDC members are invited to
attend. Please give your input and
ideas to the board members. The
meetings are brief and completed at 7:00 p.m. before the dance lessons begin.

DANCE BASICS
I have
experienced dancing for over twenty years now both as a leader and follower. In
that time I have developed a list of
Pet-
peeves.
I'd like to
look at things from the follower's perspective and give you my top three gripes
about leaders.
Number Three:
DON'T be so involved with yourself that you forget that you're actually
dancing with a human being.
This can
take two forms. The leader gets so caught up in his footwork, his styling, his
cool moves that he forgets about what his partner is experiencing. Another
version of this is when the leader is more concerned with who's walking in the
door; who's
giving him
the eye from across the room, who he'd like to dance with next...that he
ignores the partner that he's currently dancing with.
Both forms
of this behavior are obnoxious and won't help your dancing in the long run.
You'll run out of partners eventually if you keep up this tactic.
Try to
strike a balance by devoting some attention to your partner's needs as well as
your own. You should both look good TOGETHER on the dance floor as a single
unit that's moving in harmony.
Number Two: DON'T assume that it's the follower's
fault if the dance step you're
leading
doesn't turn out as you planned.
A Leader
tends to place the blame on the follower when something goes wrong with a dance
pattern because he has a very clear idea in his mind of what he wants to
accomplish.
What he doesn't realize is that he may not be sharing his vision with his
partner by providing her with clear directions for the dance pattern.
If something
doesn't work out, ask the follower why she didn't feel the lead for the
particular step. She may be able to give you valuable insight that will improve
your leading ability.
Better yet,
learn the follower's footwork for each pattern. You'll be able to lead much
better if you know first hand what you're actually asking the follower to do.
Number One: DON'T leave bruises or
your
thumb prints
anywhere on your partner's
body as a
permanent reminder of your dance together.
Don't laugh.
I've actually had someone's thumbs imprinted on the tops of both hands for an
entire day! This is usually a beginner's trademark. They tend to really
squeeze
their partner's hands while they're struggling to remember new dance steps.
Lighten up, guys! If you relax, you'll think and move better.
Bruises are
more likely to come from leaders who are at the intermediate level and up. They
are most likely the result of an over extended elbow on a leader's turn.
Moves at
this level are trickier and faster so loss of balance can also be an issue
here. To avoid this problem, take it slowly with the trickier stuff at first
and pay attention to your elbow position.
All right! Now we’ll look at things from the
leader's perspective and give you my top three DONT'S for followers.
#3 DON'T
ASSUME you know every move the leader will make from the moment he takes your
hand.
I've danced
with women who seem to be on automatic pilot. They dance through patterns
they're familiar with despite my best efforts to get them to do otherwise.
Even the
best of leaders will find it nearly impossible to control a woman who is hell
bent on doing 5 spins when the actual lead calls for a slow half turn.
Ladies,
please start each dance with a blank slate that is waiting to be written upon
by the leader. Assume nothing.
#2 DON'T
ACCUSE the leader of misdirecting you.
While I've
heard it said many times that the leader is responsible for what happens on the
dance floor, hurling accusations at the leader when things go wrong
accomplishes nothing. Michael and I have solved this problem by substituting
communication for accusation.
When a dance
pattern is not working, first I find out what it is exactly that he wants me to
do at that point in the measure. Then I think about what I would need to feel
in terms of a lead to accomplish that. Whether
it's extra
compression, a slight push forward on my shoulder... you get the idea.
Followers,
before you accuse your leaders of making you look bad on the dance floor, think
about how much more exchanging information will accomplish. Leaders
will lead
better, followers will look better and peace will be maintained.
#1 DON'T
MAKE FACES
Women tend
to be more expressive by nature. The next time you're out dancing, take a look
at some of the expressions they're making while dancing and you'll
be
surprised.
You can tell
at a glace which followers are bored, angry, frustrated, and panic stricken.
This can be very disconcerting (perhaps even insulting?) for leaders.
Ladies,
you'll be much more popular on the dance floor if you learn to control your
facial expressions. No matter what's going on inside, make sure that you have a
smile or other pleasant expression on your face.
I think
you'll find that a smile will help you to feel and dance better as well as
making your partner happy. It's a win-win situation.
