Notes From the board
Our final board
meeting for the current dance year was held on 4/12/05 at the CLSCC. We reviewed the treasurer’s report and
approved money to pay expenses from the annual Graduation Dance. Although we had a small turnout for the
April 9th dance, those who came enjoyed the wonderful music and the
spacious dance floor. We were
encouraged to see many new dancers enjoying this event as well as many of our
“regulars” in attendance.
Many of our club
members attended the annual Black Hills Dance Festival. Congratulations to all the Black Hills Dance
Company board members for putting on another successful dance event. The
instruction was top notch! Rex Jones
kept us laughing and learning at the same time—not an easy task. The entertainment was excellent; it’s
wonderful watching talented dancers share their love for dancing through their
performance.
The Tuesday night
lessons are completed for this year. We had excellent attendance and
instruction for these sessions. A HUGE THANK YOU to Linda and
Henry for volunteering their time and expertise. We had great fun and learned so much about dancing.
Other opportunities
for dancing and dance lessons this summer are advertised in this newsletter.
For the first three weeks in May, Heartland Dancing is sponsoring
a series of dance lessons at the Canyon Lake Senior Center on Thursday
evenings. Beginner Night Club Two-Step
is from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. and Intermediate West Coast Swing is from 8:00 – 9:00
p.m. at a cost of $20 per person.
Remember to attend the monthly DJ dances on
the second Friday of each month. These dances are held at the Moose Lodge
with Linda and Henry furnishing DJ music from 8:45 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Free-will
donations are welcome. There is plenty
of floor space and great music for dancing!
We’ve had a nice turnout this year and hope to get even more of you
interested in coming each month
Also, we want to
encourage and support your attendance at the monthly dances held upstairs at
the new Roosevelt Recreation/Swim Center. These dances are scheduled from 7:30 – 10:30 p.m. on the fourth
Friday of each month. These
monthly dances are hosted by Debbie Ellerton.
Wandave DJ’s furnish the music.
The wood floor is wonderful for dancing and the room is smoke-free. Plan to check out this new facility and
attend the next dance on Friday, May 27th.
Admission is $5 per person.
Attendance at the dances has been great, and includes line and couples
dancers of all ages having a great time dancing to great music!
Also, Les Harrington
will be available every Sunday afternoon (1:00 – 3:00 PM) at the
Rapid City Moose Lodge, for those dancers and students who wish to practice
and/or receive instruction over the summer period.
We’ll see all of you
again in September when the DTDC will host a “Potluck Dinner and Dance” at the
CLSCC, date & band TBA.
In October we will
also continue offering weekly dance lessons with Linda and Henry each
Tuesday night at the Viking Hall in the CLSCC. Beginners: 7:00 p.m.,
Intermediates at 8:00 p.m. During the
past years we had several members request that more singles attend so please
come, even if you don’t have a partner!

Profile
Suzanne Kieper Fisher, Photographer and retired Social Worker; first moved to the Rapid City area from Omaha, Nebraska in 1985. I left in 1997 to live in Bismarck, North Dakota and Sioux Falls, South Dakota before returning to my lovely Black Hills home in 2002, to be nearer to my family. I’ve always loved music and danced as a child and teenager; ballet, Toe, Tap and so on for teen dances and formals; but never had a serious dance partner with whom I could learn to dance and move on the floor. Luckily, over the past year or so while taking lessons with Henry and Linda, during the Tuesday night lessons, I have met and danced with several new friends and have
been able to enjoy the experiences of partner dancing.
I joined the Dakota Territory Dance Club in late 2004 after starting to dance in October 2004. I enjoy the East Coast Swing & Jitter Bug; with my favorite music coming from the 50’s and 60’s and I’m currently learning to dance Country, which is a new venue for me. Learning the Waltz has been especially dear to me; as I vividly remember watching my grandparents as they danced the waltz. To me dance is a feel good thing, with the music, the rhythm, feelings and friends. The exercise is another bonus too!
So far my most memorable dance moments came from the April 2005 Black Hills Dance Festival. It was very exciting taking lessons from and meeting the local and national dance instructors and the numerous dancers and new friends.

Basics
"Perfect Practice Makes Perfect"
vs. the "Feel Good" Method.
By H. Leon Raper
Most people
have heard the saying "practice makes perfect." That can result in
massive frustration and probable failure. Those familiar with the problem
restate the saying correctly: "perfect practice makes perfect."
However, in the early stages of learning to dance most dancers
use the
"feel good" method of learning. That is, rather than practicing
exactly what they were
taught by
their instructor, they practice over and over again until the pattern starts to
"feel good."
Odds are
that the only reason the pattern feels good is because the dancers are
compensating for each others mistakes – and if the truth were told, it really
does not feel that good, they are struggling. Then they wonder why they are
unable to execute more advanced patterns that require expertise in the earlier
patterns - which were learned incorrectly. Many people use the
"feel
good" method because they can not remember all the instruction they were
given and are
embarrassed
to ask for help. Dancing is supposed to be fun, so if you are frustrated and
not
having much
fun then ask your instructor for help. Don't just examine the step pattern,
examine
dance technique
such as: frame, body movement – including the FFF principle (feet follow
frame).
Also, developing an understanding of Skippy Blair's "Universal Unit
System" (TM) will be a great help in improving your dance abilities very
quickly. If you don't remember everything, ask the instructor again.
Instructors really enjoy helping people who are trying hard to learn - ask a
lot of questions and really listen. Also, do not get in such a big hurry. If
you slow down you will not have to work so hard and will learn much faster.
"Don't work hard, work smart." Really listen to your instructor -
understand exactly what to do on each step of a pattern. Then, practice what
you understand. If something still does not feel right after a little practice
then ask your instructor for help. "Perfect Practice" results
from
entering your practice session armed with a good understanding of what you wish
to accomplish and devoting sufficient time for practice. "Makes
Perfect" will automatically result from sufficient "Perfect Practice."
Dancing will be a lot more fun.
